The safest access is from adjacent beaches to the north and south, but this access may be obstructed by high tides or surf. Black's Beach is a secluded section of beach beneath the bluffs of Torrey Pines on the Pacific Ocean in La Jolla, San Diego, California, United States. It is officially part of Torrey Pines State Beach. The northern portion of Black's Beach is owned and managed by the California Department of Parks and Recreation, while the southern portion of the beach, officially known as Torrey Pines City Beach, is jointly owned by the city of San Diego and the state park, but is managed by the city of San Diego.[1][2] This distinction is important as Black's Beach is most known as a nude beach, a practice that is now prohibited in the southern portion managed by the city of San Diego.[3][unreliable source?]
Black's Beach was named for the Black family who had a horse ranch overlooking the beach. They sold the land, and then it was subdivided into La Jolla Farms lots. The Farms' residents retained the Black family's private road to the beach.[4] Many mansions can be seen in the southern portion of the beach, including the Salk Mansion. There is a funicular that goes all the way down from a mansion on the cliff to the beach into a structure known by locals as the mushroom house.[5][failed verification]

Black's Beach in San Diego is one of the largest nude beaches in the United States[9] and is popular with Southern Californian nudists and naturists. Originally including the current Torrey Pines State Beach, Black's Beach was the first and only public nude beach in the country for several years in the mid-1970s.[3] Because Black's Beach was traditionally recognized as a clothing-optional beach, nudity is tolerated for the portion of the beach that is managed by the state park.[1][10] Until 1977, the city portion of Black's Beach was posted as "swimsuit optional"; in that year, nudity was prohibited on that part of the beach.[11]
The clothing-optional portion of Black's Beach begins about 100 yards (91 m) south of the trail head leading to the Torrey Pines Gliderport, and runs north for approximately 1.1 miles (1.8 km) to the beached steel buoy south of Flatrock Point.[12]

Black's Beach is known for its powerful currents which can pose a risk to swimmers. It is important to note that lifeguards are not consistently on duty, rather, they occasionally patrol beaches and therefore all children require direct supervision at all times.
The beach is broken into two sections. The north side is part of the state park and the south side is part of the city of San Diego. Although not the official boundary, the Gliderport trail that leads to the beach serves as a marker for most people.
Blacks Beach is also known for world class surfing. Typically, the southern end of the beach has the best surf. Nonetheless, on busy days, you will see people taking their boards out along the entire stretch.
Blacks Beach is a beach break but there is a deep underwater canyon just past the surf zone that creates these large powerful waves with beautiful peaks. The surfing stays consistent throughout the year, but winter is the best time to catch truly amazing waves.
When the surf is at its best, it is very challenging and ideal only for very experienced surfers. Less experienced surfers may find some easier waves towards the state park side of the beach. Even if the waves are outside of your comfort zone, it is always fun to watch some of the incredible surfing.
Perhaps the second most famous characteristic of Blacks Beach is that it is clothing optional. Only the part of the beach within Torrey Pines State Reserve allows beachgoers to strip down; the section in the city of San Diego requires clothing like most other beaches.
There is a broad mix of all sorts of people taking advantage of these freer beach rules. Also, many people report the community as being very judgment-free. This section is well-defined, making it hard to accidentally end up on the wrong side of the beach.
Due to being fairly difficult to access, Blacks Beach is only frequented by surfers and people who want to enjoy the clothing-optional section. There will often be other people on the beach, but the crowds are very minimal.
If you want to enjoy the day on a quintessential Southern California beach, this one of a great choice. Some of the turns in the cliffs provide a little natural shade. However, for the most part, you will be out in the sun all along the beach. 041b061a72
